Parents and grandparents visiting family in Canada for Super Visa support

Super Visa Canada for Parents and Grandparents

Canada’s Super Visa program is designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians who want to make extended family visits. Eligible visitors may be authorized to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time, with multiple entries during the visa’s validity. Dependants cannot be included in a Super Visa application.

For many families, the program offers a practical way to attend important celebrations, help after childbirth, spend time with grandchildren, or simply enjoy family life in Canada without being limited to a typical short visit.

What Is a Super Visa?

A Super Visa is a temporary resident visa created specifically for eligible parents and grandparents. Unlike a regular visitor visa, which generally permits a stay of up to six months at a time, a Super Visa can allow a much longer stay during each entry. The visa may be issued for multiple entries and may remain valid for up to ten years, subject to passport validity and the officer’s decision.

A Super Visa does not provide permanent resident status or authorization to work. The visitor remains a temporary resident and must follow the conditions of their stay.

Main benefits

  • Extended stays with children and grandchildren in Canada.
  • Multiple entries while the visa remains valid.
  • Fewer repeated applications for short family visits.
  • A temporary option while a parent or grandparent sponsorship process is pending.
  • More flexibility for family support and important life events.

Super Visa vs. Regular Visitor Visa

A visitor visa is usually more appropriate for tourism, events, or family trips lasting six months or less. A Super Visa is intended for eligible parents and grandparents who want longer visits and can meet the additional income, insurance, and medical requirements.

Who Can Apply?

The applicant must be the parent or grandparent of an eligible host in Canada. The applicant must generally apply from outside Canada, be admissible, complete an immigration medical exam, obtain qualifying private medical insurance, and satisfy IRCC that the visit is temporary.

The program is not available to siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, or other relatives. A spouse or common-law partner may submit their own application when eligible, but dependants cannot be included in the Super Visa application.

Who Can Be the Host in Canada?

The host must be the applicant’s child or grandchild. The host must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and live in Canada.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian.
  • Meet or exceed the applicable minimum necessary income.
  • Provide a signed invitation letter and promise financial support during the visit.
  • Provide evidence of the relationship to the parent or grandparent.

An eligible spouse or common-law partner may co-sign the invitation and contribute income evidence. Other relatives cannot co-sign to meet the program’s income requirement.

Minimum Necessary Income

The host must meet the income requirement for their calculated family size. Family size can include the host, spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, the visiting parent or grandparent, other Super Visa applicants invited at the same time, and certain people covered by previous sponsorship or Super Visa commitments.

Income evidence may include a Notice of Assessment, T4 or T1, employment letter, recent pay statements, bank statements, and appropriate self-employment or business records. The current income table should always be checked before filing because the amounts can change.

Invitation Letter Requirements

The invitation letter should clearly explain the relationship, purpose and expected duration of the visit, accommodation arrangements, and financial support. It should identify everyone counted in the host’s family-size calculation and include the host’s signed promise of support.

  • Host’s full name, date of birth, Canadian address, contact details, and status in Canada.
  • Applicant’s full name, relationship to the host, proposed travel dates, and reason for visiting.
  • Accommodation and financial-support arrangements.
  • Names and dates of birth of people included in the family-size calculation.
  • Supporting proof that the host meets the required income level.

Proof of Relationship

The application must establish that the visitor is the host’s parent or grandparent. Useful evidence can include birth certificates, family registration records, marriage certificates explaining name changes, or other official civil documents. Documents not written in English or French should be submitted with a compliant translation.

Super Visa Medical Insurance

Qualifying private health insurance is a central program requirement. The applicant needs an actual policy—not merely a quote—and must be able to present proof of coverage when entering Canada.

The policy must generally:

  • Be valid for at least one year from the planned date of entry.
  • Provide at least $100,000 in emergency coverage.
  • Cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation.
  • Be paid in full or through an accepted instalment arrangement with a deposit.
  • Be issued by an insurer that meets IRCC’s eligibility rules.

Families should review deductibles, exclusions, pre-existing-condition stability periods, refund provisions, effective dates, and renewal terms. Coverage should be maintained throughout the visitor’s stay.

Immigration Medical Examination

Super Visa applicants must complete an immigration medical examination with an IRCC-approved panel physician. A regular family doctor cannot complete the immigration exam unless they are also an approved panel physician. Instructions and proof of completion should be retained for the application.

Documents Commonly Required

  • Valid passport, digital photograph, and completed application forms.
  • Invitation letter from the child or grandchild in Canada.
  • Proof of the family relationship.
  • Proof of the host’s Canadian status, residence, income, and family size.
  • Qualifying medical insurance policy.
  • Proof of the immigration medical examination.
  • Applicant’s financial documents, travel history, purpose-of-visit explanation, and evidence of home-country ties.
  • Marriage certificate and certified translations where applicable.
  • Country-specific documents and a representative form, if applicable.

The responsible visa office may request additional evidence based on the applicant’s country and circumstances.

Showing Temporary Intent and Home-Country Ties

A Super Visa permits a long visit, but it remains temporary. IRCC may consider the purpose of travel, family and financial situation, previous travel compliance, and whether the applicant is likely to leave Canada at the end of the authorized stay.

Relevant ties may include a spouse or close family remaining abroad, property, pension income, employment or business interests, community responsibilities, finances, and a clear reason to return.

Super Visa Application Process

  1. Confirm eligibility: verify the applicant-host relationship and the host’s status.
  2. Calculate family size: determine the correct income threshold and potential co-signer eligibility.
  3. Gather host documents: prepare status, income, address, relationship, and invitation evidence.
  4. Gather applicant documents: organize civil records, finances, travel history, and temporary-intent evidence.
  5. Arrange medical insurance: obtain a policy that satisfies current IRCC requirements.
  6. Complete the medical exam: attend an approved panel physician.
  7. Submit online: file the forms and supporting documents through the applicable IRCC portal.
  8. Complete biometrics: provide fingerprints and a photograph if instructed.
  9. Respond to requests: supply any additional evidence requested by IRCC.
  10. Submit the passport if approved: follow the visa-issuance instructions.

Common Problems and Refusal Risks

  • Incorrect family-size calculation or insufficient host income.
  • Missing details in the invitation letter.
  • Weak or unclear proof of relationship.
  • An insurance quote instead of a qualifying policy.
  • Missing medical-exam evidence.
  • Vague visit plans or weak evidence of temporary intent.
  • Inconsistent information across forms, letters, and documents.
  • Missing translations or country-specific documents.
  • Unexplained previous refusals or travel-history concerns.

Super Visa and Parent Sponsorship

A Super Visa is a temporary resident option, while the Parents and Grandparents Program is a permanent residence pathway. A person may apply for a Super Visa while a sponsorship application is being processed, provided they meet all Super Visa requirements.

Super Visa Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a parent or grandparent stay?

Eligible applicants who applied on or after June 22, 2023 may be authorized to stay for up to five years at a time.

Is medical insurance mandatory?

Yes. The applicant must provide proof of a qualifying policy that meets the current duration, coverage, payment, and insurer requirements.

Can dependants be included?

No. Dependants cannot be included in a Super Visa application.

Can the host’s spouse co-sign?

An eligible spouse or common-law partner may co-sign and contribute income evidence. Other relatives cannot co-sign.

Does insurance and sufficient income guarantee approval?

No. IRCC also assesses admissibility, temporary intent, the purpose of the visit, family ties, finances, and the complete application record.

Can a Super Visa holder work in Canada?

No. A Super Visa authorizes visiting, not employment. Separate work authorization would be required.

Can a visa-exempt parent or grandparent apply?

They may still seek Super Visa status for longer visits. If approved, they may receive a letter to present at entry and may also require an eTA when travelling by air.

Can insurance be renewed?

Many policies permit renewal or extension subject to their terms. Visitors should maintain valid qualifying coverage throughout their stay.

Applicant and Family Questions

Can parents and grandparents apply together?

Yes. Each person must submit an individual application, although family members may prepare and submit their applications together.

Can a widowed parent apply?

Yes. Being widowed does not prevent a parent from applying if all eligibility requirements are met.

Can divorced parents apply?

Yes. Each eligible parent may submit their own application.

Can only my mother or only my father apply?

Yes. One eligible parent may apply without the other parent applying.

Can a step-parent qualify?

It depends on the legal parent-child relationship and the documents available to establish that relationship.

Can foster parents qualify?

The applicant must meet IRCC’s definition of a parent or grandparent. Foster relationships should be reviewed individually before applying.

Can parents living outside their country of citizenship apply?

Yes, provided they apply from outside Canada and can document their lawful status in the country from which they apply when required.

Is there an age limit for Super Visa applicants?

There is no specific maximum age, but every applicant must meet the medical, insurance, admissibility, and other program requirements.

Is an English or French language test required?

No language test is required for a Super Visa application.

Medical Insurance Questions

Is ordinary travel insurance the same as Super Visa insurance?

Not necessarily. The policy must satisfy IRCC’s specific Super Visa requirements for duration, coverage, payment, and insurer eligibility.

Does Super Visa insurance cover emergency surgery?

Eligible emergency surgery may be covered, but coverage depends on the policy’s terms, exclusions, limits, and medical-stability requirements.

Does it cover hospitalization?

Qualifying policies cover eligible emergency hospitalization, subject to the individual policy.

Does it cover ambulance transportation?

Many policies cover eligible emergency ambulance services. Limits and exclusions vary.

Are prescription medications covered?

Medication required during a covered emergency may be included. Routine prescriptions are generally treated differently, so the policy wording should be checked.

Are specialist doctors and follow-up treatment covered?

Emergency specialist care or follow-up treatment may be covered when connected to an eligible emergency. Coverage depends on the policy.

Are dental emergencies covered?

Some plans include limited emergency dental benefits. The amount and eligible circumstances vary.

Is COVID-19 treatment covered?

Some insurers include eligible emergency treatment related to COVID-19. Families should confirm the current policy terms before purchasing coverage.

Are cancer treatment or dialysis covered?

Ongoing or planned treatment is commonly excluded. Only an eligible unforeseen emergency may be covered, depending on pre-existing-condition and policy rules.

Are heart attacks and strokes covered?

Emergency treatment may be covered if the event and any related pre-existing condition satisfy the policy’s eligibility and stability provisions.

Can the coverage amount or deductible be changed?

Insurers may offer different coverage limits and deductibles. Changes after purchase depend on the insurer’s rules and may require a new policy or underwriting review.

Host Income Questions

Does pension or CPP income count?

Documented pension income may be considered. The evidence should clearly establish the amount and source.

Does rental income count?

It may be considered when it is properly documented through tax and supporting financial records.

Does business income count?

Self-employment or business income may count when supported by appropriate tax, corporate, accounting, and banking documents.

Does investment income count?

Certain documented investment income may be considered. The type, regularity, and tax treatment of the income can matter.

Does Employment Insurance count?

Treatment can depend on the benefit and the host’s circumstances. The complete income record should be reviewed against current IRCC requirements.

Which year’s income is used?

IRCC accepts specified forms of income evidence. Many hosts provide their latest Notice of Assessment together with current employment and income documents.

What if the host’s income recently increased?

Current employment letters, pay statements, contracts, and banking records may help demonstrate present income, but the full evidence must satisfy IRCC.

Can spouses combine their income?

An eligible spouse or common-law partner may co-sign the invitation letter and contribute qualifying income.

Can siblings combine income?

No. A sibling cannot co-sign merely to help the host meet the income requirement.

Application and Biometrics Questions

Can I prepare and submit the application myself?

Yes. Applicants are not required to hire a representative.

Can I hire an immigration representative?

Yes. Applicants may retain an authorized representative, but hiring a lawyer or RCIC is not mandatory.

Are Super Visa applications submitted online?

IRCC directs applicants to submit through the applicable online portal. Paper filing is available only in specific situations recognized by IRCC.

How long are biometrics valid?

Biometrics for temporary residence are generally valid for ten years. They can limit how long a visa may be issued, and some applicants may choose to provide them again when nearing expiry.

Can documents be updated after submission?

Applicants may be able to provide updates through their online account or the IRCC web form, and IRCC may request additional documents.

Can an application be withdrawn?

A request to withdraw can be submitted while processing is underway. IRCC decides whether the request can be accepted, and fees may not be fully refunded.

Can I reapply after a refusal?

Yes. Before reapplying, review the refusal reasons and correct the weaknesses rather than resubmitting the same evidence.

Medical Examination Questions

Where can the immigration medical exam be completed?

It must be completed by an IRCC-approved panel physician.

Can a family doctor perform the medical exam?

Only if that doctor is also an approved panel physician.

How long is the medical exam valid?

Validity depends on IRCC’s assessment and instructions. Applicants should not assume an older exam remains usable.

Do seniors require additional tests?

The panel physician determines the examinations and tests required based on IRCC instructions and the applicant’s circumstances.

Will diabetes, high blood pressure, or previous surgery cause refusal?

Not automatically. Medical admissibility is assessed individually based on the medical findings and applicable immigration law.

Should applicants disclose their medical history?

Yes. All medical and application information must be complete and truthful.

Document Questions

Do documents need to be translated?

Documents not in English or French must be accompanied by translations that meet IRCC’s requirements.

Who can translate the documents?

Translation and affidavit requirements depend on whether the translator is certified. Applicants should follow IRCC’s current document-translation instructions.

Can scanned document copies be uploaded?

Yes, clear electronic copies are generally uploaded with an online application. Originals must be provided if IRCC requests them.

Does the passport need at least six months of validity?

The passport must be valid. Longer validity is advisable because a visa cannot be issued beyond the passport’s expiry date.

Should bank statements be included?

They may be useful when relevant to income, financial support, available funds, or home-country ties.

Should property records be included?

Property evidence may help demonstrate home-country ties, but ownership alone does not guarantee approval.

Should employment letters be included?

Yes, when employment is relevant to host income or the applicant’s home-country ties.

Travel and Extension Questions

Can parents travel separately or arrive on different dates?

Yes. Each traveller is assessed individually and may travel separately while their passport and travel authorization remain valid.

Can Super Visa visitors travel between Canadian provinces?

Yes. The Super Visa does not restrict ordinary domestic travel within Canada.

Can visitors leave Canada and return?

Yes, provided their travel document remains valid. Admission and the authorized period of stay are determined at each entry.

Should visitors carry their insurance documents?

Yes. Proof of qualifying insurance should be available for review by a border services officer.

Can a Super Visa stay be extended?

A visitor may apply to extend their temporary resident status before the current authorized stay expires.

When should an extension application be submitted?

It must be submitted before status expires. Applying early allows time to prepare the required evidence and continued insurance coverage.

What happens if the insurance expires?

The visitor should maintain qualifying coverage throughout the stay and arrange renewal or extension before the policy expires.

Refusal Questions

What should I do after a Super Visa refusal?

Review the refusal letter and the previous application carefully, identify the officer’s concerns, and address them with stronger or corrected evidence before reapplying.

Should I request GCMS notes?

GCMS notes may provide additional information about the officer’s assessment, although their usefulness depends on the case.

Can stronger financial documents or a better invitation letter help?

Yes, when finances or the visit plan were concerns. New evidence should directly address the refusal reasons.

Should previous refusals be disclosed and explained?

Yes. Previous refusals must be answered truthfully and should be addressed where relevant.

Can positive travel history help?

Compliant travel history may support temporary intent, but it is only one factor in the overall assessment.

General Super Visa Questions

Is a Super Visa permanent residence?

No. It is a temporary resident visa for extended family visits.

Can a Super Visa holder start a business?

Business ownership and actively working in a business are different. Separate corporate, tax, licensing, and immigration rules may apply, and the Super Visa itself does not authorize work.

Can a Super Visa holder volunteer?

Some genuine volunteer activities may be permitted, but an activity that competes in the Canadian labour market may constitute unauthorized work.

Can a Super Visa holder study?

Short-term study may be permitted in limited circumstances. Programs longer than six months generally require a study permit.

Does buying property in Canada improve approval chances?

Property ownership does not guarantee approval and does not replace the program’s eligibility requirements.

Can a Super Visa be cancelled?

Yes. A visa may be cancelled when permitted under Canadian immigration law, including in cases involving misrepresentation or inadmissibility.

Is approval guaranteed if every requested document is submitted?

No. An officer assesses the entire application and makes the final decision.
